PCB Drilling Materials for India's PCB Manufacturers

Backup boards, 1100 H18 aluminum entry, coated lubricant entry and back-drill aluminum — for the Bengaluru, Hosur, Pune and Gujarat clusters

YUESHAN supplies PCB drilling consumables to Indian plants: backup board grades from HDF 880 (75±2 HD) through UV Melamine 950 (83±3 HD) to Phenolic PHE (90±5 HD), 1100 H18 aluminum entry in 0.15–0.28 mm selected against the smallest drill diameter, coated lubricant aluminum for microvias below Ø0.15 mm, and back-drill aluminum for the secondary pass — in 940 × 1245 mm and 520 × 620 mm sheets, MOQ 100–200 sheets, free samples with TDS and SDS, quoted FOB Nansha or CIF Chennai and Nhava Sheva.

India's PCB industry is being rebuilt around domestic capacity rather than around imported laminate, and that changes what a drilling consumable has to do. Boards that used to arrive finished now run on local lines, at layer counts and via diameters those lines did not previously handle. The backup board and the aluminum entry sheet stop being line supplies and become the two components that decide exit burr, hole position and bit life. This page records the conditions specific to Indian plants — clusters, humidity, import paperwork, channel availability — and the grade logic that does not change. To compare conditions across regions first, start from the regional supply directory.

Where the capacity is being built

Three numbers shape the demand. The Indian PCB market was valued at roughly USD 7.3 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach about USD 25.5 billion by 2034. The Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme, notified in March 2025 with an outlay around USD 2.6 billion, approved seven new plants in its first year with roughly ₹5,532 crore of investment and layer capability up to 24 layers, aimed at covering about 20% of domestic demand against an import share near 88%. Alongside that, 5G coverage reached 779 districts by December 2024, pulling high-layer-count telecom boards into domestic production.

Sources: scheme notifications and published market estimates, 2024–2026. These figures describe the demand context; they are not a claim that YUESHAN supplies any named plant.

The practical consequence for a consumable buyer is a shift in product mix rather than in volume alone. Double-sided and 4–8 layer work still dominates consumption, and standard HDF covers it. The growth is in HDI, 8–24 layer and back-drilled boards, where the material decisions are less forgiving. What that transition costs when the material is not matched is documented in the ECMS localisation note.

Clusters and what each one drills

Bengaluru, Karnataka

Multilayer and HDI work for automotive, telecom and industrial customers, with a large EMS base around it. Ambient humidity here regularly runs above 65% RH, which is the single most common cause of flatness complaints on HDF. Plants in this cluster typically run HDF 880 on standard lines and UV Melamine 880 wherever 12+ layers or Ø0.15 mm vias appear.

Hosur and Chennai, Tamil Nadu

The newest capacity, including HDI plants approved under the scheme. New lines have no incumbent material habit, so the grade is usually settled during line qualification rather than inherited. For microvia work below Ø0.15 mm, coated lubricant entry paired with UV Melamine 950 is the usual starting point.

Pune, Maharashtra and Gujarat

Automotive electronics and industrial control, with thick copper on power layers. Thick copper wears bits faster, so the entry sheet has to carry lubrication rather than only guidance, and back-drill aluminum appears wherever stub control is specified.

Noida and Hyderabad

EMS and defense-adjacent production. This is where documentation, not material, decides the order: a phenolic grade with a certificate package and lot traceability is often required before a sample is even accepted.

Entry board and backup board are not substitutes

The entry board sits above the stack, locates the bit as it enters and, when coated, absorbs friction heat. The backup board sits below the stack and supports the exit side so glass fibre and copper are cut rather than torn. That second function is the whole of exit burr control. A plant that upgrades one and not the other usually reports no improvement and concludes the material was wrong, when the mismatch was in the pair. Definitions first if this is new: what an entry board does and what a backup board does.

Entry thickness against drill diameter

Drill diameter (mm)Entry thickness (mm)
0.20–0.250.15–0.20
0.30–0.350.18–0.25
0.40–0.450.20–0.28

Plain 1100 H18 is sufficient from Ø0.15 mm upward on PTH work. Below that, the coating is doing the work — see the HDI drilling guide for the mechanism.

Humidity is the constraint, not the grade

The most common quality complaint from Indian plants is not hardness but warp. Boards arrive flat, sit in stores through a monsoon week, and go to the drill two panels out of tolerance. The cause is moisture, not the supplier's press. Ambient conditions in Bengaluru, Pune and Gujarat regularly exceed 65% RH, and unsealed HDF takes it up within days.

One documented scale-up makes the size of the effect clear: an Indian manufacturer running 12+ layer HDI with Ø0.15 mm vias was losing boards to flatness deviations above 0.15 mm. After moving standard lines to HDF 880 and HDI lines to UV Melamine 880, drill breakage fell from 2.3% to 0.8%, warp-related backup scrap from 4–5% to under 1%, and stack height rose from two panels to three. The full record, including the caveat that it is an anonymised case from our own supply files, is in the Indian HDI scale-up case. The mechanism itself is set out in the moisture control guide, and sheet breakage in backup board snapping.

Back-drill: the tolerance budget is spent at entry

Back-drill depth tolerance is typically ±0.05 mm. An uncoated entry sheet lets the bit wander two to three mil before it reaches copper, which is roughly half the budget before the cut begins. A resin-coated one-piece back-drill sheet holds entry position to about ±0.01 mm and carries a margin-reserved edge so the machine's mushroom-head operation is not obstructed.

This matters most on the 16–32 layer telecom and server boards now being pulled into domestic production by the 5G build-out. Most Indian plants still back-drill with plain aluminum or a paper-and-aluminum combination, which was never designed for this tolerance. The grade logic, the coating bond and the CPK question are covered in the India back-drill selection guide and the back-drill principle.

What can be checked before you commit

Records from our own supply files

  • A Singapore-registered customer has bought aluminum entry continuously since 2017, at a fixed 1100 H18, 0.18 mm specification, with a Philippine OSAT as end user.
  • Every lot is inspected before dispatch; no quality claims were raised on the lots shipped in 2025.
  • Aluminum is priced on a SMM spot plus conversion formula, not a fixed rate — so a quotation tracks metal, and should be re-checked against the SMM price on the day it is issued.
  • An Indian channel partner representing several PCB brands has been in commercial discussion since 2025, with a prioritised account sequence confirmed in mid-2026.
  • There is no nationwide distributor or local stock in India. The route is stated in the quotation, not assumed from this page.

The trading history is in the Singapore eight-year supply record; the portfolio and channel structure in the Indian channel partner case. How a supplier is qualified, and the document set buyers ask for, is in the supplier qualification guide.

Lead time, import documents and support

The three questions that follow a grade decision are always the same: when it lands, what paperwork travels with it, and who answers when something goes wrong. All three belong in the quotation, not in an email thread, so ask for them in the first RFQ round.

ItemHow it actually runsWhat to fix in the quotation
ProductionStocked grades are typically 7–15 working days. Special grades, non-standard thickness and cut-to-panel runs need longer because the press schedule has to be set.Ready date counted from order confirmation, not from the enquiry, stated per grade.
FreightSea from Nansha to Chennai is roughly 12–18 days and to Nhava Sheva roughly 18–22 days depending on sailing, plus customs clearance. Sample lots travel by air.Destination port, Incoterm (EXW / FOB Nansha / CIF) and who arranges transport.
Import documentsCommercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, non-preferential certificate of origin, HS classification and the importer's IEC details. There is no preferential tariff route for Chinese-origin goods in normal use, so budget duty at the applied rate and settle classification with your CHA before the first shipment, not after.HS code to be used, IEC and AD code on the invoice, any BIS or buyer-specific quality requirement.
Technical documentsTDS, lot-wise COA, SDS and a composition declaration on request — sent with the lot or ahead of delivery.Which documents your QA has to archive, and whether a signed and stamped copy is needed.
Support contactOne contact from sample through repeat order, working in English by email or WhatsApp, with technical questions answered by the person who wrote the quotation.Name and channel written into the quotation itself.

Cut sheets have a shorter shelf life than full sheets. If the material will sit in stores before it goes to the line, say when it will actually be used so the cutting run can be scheduled close to that date.

If your process requires a local channel

Some Indian buyers cannot place an import order directly, whether because of GST invoicing, a preferred-vendor list or a requirement that claims be handled locally. YUESHAN does not hold stock in India and does not claim a nationwide distributor. What exists is an active commercial relationship with a channel partner covering multiple PCB brands, at the account stage rather than the stocking stage. If a local channel is a requirement, say so in the first message — the route is confirmed before sampling rather than after, and the answer may be that the route is not yet available for your state.

Sample and quotation path

  1. Send the specification — layer count, board thickness, smallest mechanical hole, panel size, monthly volume, delivery point.
  2. We propose a pair — entry plus backup, with the technical reason for each and the one failure the trial should prove.
  3. Free samples — dispatched in 3–5 working days by air with TDS and SDS, for a side-by-side run against the current material.
  4. Production order — typically 2–3 weeks, FOB Nansha or CIF Chennai / Nhava Sheva.

Neighbouring conditions are compared in the market-by-market delivery comparison; the ASEAN route, which shares much of the same documentation logic, is on the Southeast Asia supply page.

Questions Indian buyers ask

What is a PCB backup board

A backup board sits under the stack during drilling and supports the exit side of the hole, reducing exit burr and drill breakage. YUESHAN supplies HDF, UV melamine and phenolic grades from about 70 HD to 90±5 HD.

Why do Indian plants change to UV melamine backup board

Not because the grade drills differently, but because ambient humidity in Bangalore, Pune and Gujarat regularly exceeds 65% RH. Plain HDF absorbs moisture between delivery and use, flatness drifts and the stack misaligns. The UV-cured surface acts as a moisture seal, so flatness holds through storage.

Which entry thickness suits which drill diameter

Ø0.20–0.25 mm takes 0.15–0.20 mm entry; Ø0.30–0.35 mm takes 0.18–0.25 mm; Ø0.40–0.45 mm takes 0.20–0.28 mm. The base alloy is 1100 H18 with a thickness tolerance of ±0.005 mm.

When does back-drill aluminum replace plain entry sheet

When the depth tolerance is ±0.05 mm, as on 16 to 32 layer telecom and server boards. An uncoated entry sheet lets the bit wander two to three mil before it reaches copper, which spends half the tolerance before drilling starts. A coated back-drill sheet holds entry position to about ±0.01 mm.

What documents ship with an order to India

Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and a non-preferential certificate of origin, with HS classification and the importer's IEC details matching your bill of entry. Technical documents are TDS, lot-wise COA, SDS and a composition declaration on request.

How long do samples and orders take to reach India

Sample lots are dispatched in 3 to 5 working days by air. Production orders run 2 to 3 weeks, then sea freight from Nansha to Chennai in roughly 12 to 18 days or to Nhava Sheva in roughly 18 to 22 days, subject to sailing schedule and customs clearance.

Does YUESHAN have a distributor in India

A channel partner covering a portfolio of Indian PCB brands has been in commercial discussion since 2025, with a prioritised account sequence confirmed in mid-2026. That is not an appointed nationwide distributor. Where a local channel is required, the route is stated in the quotation rather than assumed.

What are the sheet formats and minimum order

Standard sheets are 940 × 1245 mm, 300 sheets per pallet with a 100-sheet minimum, and 520 × 620 mm, 800 sheets per pallet with a 200-sheet minimum. Cut-to-panel supply is available against the plant's panel format.

Which failure should a first trial target

Pick one measurable failure, not the whole stack. Exit burr height, drill breakage rate, hole position Cpk or stub length. A trial that changes entry and backup at once cannot tell you which change produced the result.
