How to Build Your Consumable Set

Most lines standardize a consumable set configuration around aluminum entry boards and phenolic or HDF backup boards to balance drill bit wear reduction against cost.

Three steps take you from a bare stack-up to a matched PCB drilling consumable set. Start from the board you actually drill, not from a material name.

  1. Define your smallest hole and stack. Note the minimum drill diameter, layer count and whether you run microvias. A 0.20 mm through-hole line and a sub-Ø0.15 mm HDI line need different entry and backup grades. If you are unsure where your board sits, the backup board selection guide maps hole size to grade.
  2. Pick the backup board by exit-burr budget. Choose HDF for cost-first 2–12 layer stacks, UV-melamine or melamine laminate for multilayer and HDI, and phenolic for tight exit quality. The HDF 880 backup board is the default for standard multilayer work.
  3. Add entry, then coated or back-drill where the line needs it. Every stack gets an 1100 H18 aluminum entry board. Step up to coated / lubricant aluminum for microvia accuracy, and add a back-drill sheet for high-speed stub control on 5G and server boards.

Consumable Set — Common Questions

What is the difference between a backup board and an entry board?

The entry board sits on top and locates the drill bit while suppressing top-side burr. The backup board sits underneath and controls exit burr and absorbs heat. Both are needed for clean holes — see the backup board range and aluminum entry boards.

Do you sell the full set or individual grades?

Both. Many customers buy a matched set qualified together; others reorder a single grade. Tell us your stack and we recommend the combination.

How do I choose the right backup board grade?
