Automotive PCB Drilling

automotive PCB drilling consumables application scene

Reliable drilling consumables for long-life, harsh-environment automotive boards.

Automotive boards are qualified for 15-year life under heat, vibration and humidity. Drilling scrap on a qualified lot is not an option — moisture-stable backup and a consistent entry keep yield high and traceability clean.

The Combination We Recommend

Each grade below is matched to the hole size, layer count and reliability target of Automotive PCB boards. Tap any card for specs and a free sample.

UV Melamine 950

★ RecommendedDefault backup · anti-warp

Our recommended default — resists warping better than melamine-laminate and costs ~20% less; ideal for thick copper and long-reliability automotive boards.

Why automotive is unforgiving

A car PCB is drilled once and expected to survive a decade of thermal cycling. A single buried burr can open a joint years later. Yields are qualified per lot, so a 1% scrap spike is a line stop, not a footnote.

The drilling consumables carry more of that risk than they appear to:

  • Thick copper (≥3 oz) work-hardens the bit and tears the exit.
  • Harsh storage swells a weak backup and shifts location.
  • Long traces need controlled stub on high-speed ADAS links.

The combination that holds yield

  • UV Melamine 950 backup — anti-warp and flat, so location stays put even after weeks in a humid store. Our recommended default for thick copper and safety-critical layers.
  • Aluminum entry 1100 H18 — the standard entry that gives a clean top and steady location across the panel.
  • Back-drill aluminum — closes the stub on ADAS and radar links where signal integrity is specified.

Grade matrix

Board Grade Role Note
Backup UV Melamine 950 Thick copper, safety layers Anti-warp, ~20% below laminate cost
Entry 1100 H18 All panels Clean top, repeatable location
Back-drill HW600 / HW900 ADAS / high-speed Stub CpK ≥1.33 (HW600), ≥1.67 (HW900)

Services built for qualification

Samples are supplied with full lot traceability and an SGS / REACH declaration. PPAP-style documentation can be arranged on request. Engineering support covers the full stack-up, not just the drill pass.

FAQ

Q: Which backup for 4 oz copper automotive? A: UV Melamine 950 — our recommended default. It resists warping better than melamine-laminate and costs about 20% less, while keeping the exit clean on thick copper. Phenolic PHE is available on request for routing worktables and specific IC jobs.

Q: Is back-drilling needed on every automotive board? A: Only on high-speed links (ADAS, radar, gateway). For those, HW900 holds the tightest stub CpK.

Q: Can you support PPAP documentation? A: Yes — lot traceability and compliance declarations ship with samples, and full PPAP packages are available on request.
