PTFE Drilling Bit Wear and Entry Support

PTFE Bit Wear · 2026-10-31 · 7 min read

Short answer: PTFE and Rogers resins are gummy, so a bit loads and smears the wall after only about 600-1,000 hits. Hold life with a stable aluminum entry, a slightly higher feed, a lower retract and 1-2 sheet stacks; ceramic-filled RO4000 wears 2-3x faster (about 300-500 hits) and needs earlier bit changes.

Number: PTFE bit life is about 600-1,000 hits with wall smear; use an aluminum entry, slightly higher feed, lower retract and 1-2 sheet stacks. Ceramic-filled RO4000 lasts about 300-500 hits — 2-3x faster wear than FR4 (hilelectronic, 8pcba, xcepcb, uniwellcircuits).

Boundary: The entry/backup board stabilizes the bit and exit; bit wear and replacement cadence are owned by the drill program and laminate abrasiveness. Follow the laminate maker's drill-recipe guidance.

PTFE drills differently from FR4 in one nasty way: the resin is soft and sticky, so the bit loads up and the hole wall smears long before the tool would fail on a glass-epoxy board.

Protect life with the stack

This is the support half of the PTFE story; the laminate prep (plasma/sodium-naphthalene desmear) is the other half — see the Rogers/PTFE page. For the tooling angle, see ceramic drill-bit selection.

Frequently Asked Questions

YUESHAN supplies the stable aluminum entry that protects PTFE drill life and wall quality. The questions below cover the bit-wear envelope and stack settings.

How long does a PTFE drill bit last?

About 600-1,000 hits before wall smear limits life; ceramic-filled RO4000 lasts only 300-500 hits — 2-3x faster wear than FR4 (hilelectronic, 8pcba, xcepcb).

How do you extend PTFE drill-bit life?

A stable aluminum entry, slightly higher feed, lower retract and 1-2 sheet stacks keep the gummy resin from loading the bit.

Why does PTFE smear the hole wall?

The soft resin coats the wall as the bit loads; an aluminum entry plus correct feed and retract manage it.

Is RO4000 harder on bits than RT-duroid?

Yes — the ceramic filler makes RO4000 2-3x more abrasive, so bit changes come earlier than on unfilled PTFE.

Does the backup matter for PTFE drilling?

A flat backup supports the soft laminate at exit, but the entry stabilizes the bit and is the bigger lever for life.

Do you supply PTFE drilling entry?

YUESHAN supplies clean aluminum and lubricant-coated entry for PTFE/Rogers stacks; request TDS and a sample.
